Overview: Part of
JET’s mission is a commitment to new plays and their development. For
this reason, we include a festival of four new plays each season,
selected from over 150 manuscript submissions. These plays are
performed as staged readings, using professional actors and directors.
Over the years, a number of these new plays have graduated from our
festival to full production on our main stage, other stages in Michigan
and beyond.
Program: The
Festival of New Plays is our entrée point for new plays. We will rarely
produce a new play on our main stage unless we have performed it or seen
it performed as a staged reading. Each play will have two staged
reading performances on consecutive evenings. These readings are
performed and directed by theatre professionals and are followed by open
discussion between the audience, actors, director and playwright, when
in attendance. Playwrights whose work is presented receive a small
honorarium.
Feedback: We
believe feedback is an important part of the creative process and the
audience plays a crucial role. After each staged reading, the audience
is invited to participate in an open discussion with the actors,
director and the playwright, if available. JET’s artistic director or
other qualified theatre professional moderates these discussions in
order to ensure meaningful and constructive feedback.
Submission Criteria:
We accept unsolicited scripts not previously produced in a professional
theatre. Full-length plays are preferred, though we will consider one
act plays. No musicals, please. Due to financial constraints, we
normally limit the number of actors to eight, though fewer are
preferred.
Special Interests:
While fine theatre is our first interest, theatre that is entertaining,
refreshing, and provocative, we are particularly interested in plays of
social conscience and in keeping with our Mission Statement provided
below.
Facilities: Our
main stage is the Aaron DeRoy Theatre of the Jewish Community Center at
Maple Drake: 193 seats, with a semi-thrust stage. The second
performance of each staged reading will take place at the Jimmy Prentiss
Morris Jewish Community Center in Oak Park.
